VALLEJO — This week in Vallejo there will be a plethora of July 4 events to attend as well as poetry, blues music and lots of baseball.
Vallejo will begin Independence Day celebrations on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with a parade led by Grand Marshals Mary Ann and Benjamin Buggs of Faith Food Friday. Musical performers, giant puppets, dancing horses, classic cars, costumed characters and city officials will march through the city, down Georgia St. and join the Mad Hatter July 4th Celebration at the waterfront.
The free daylong festivities will include music by six live bands, cultural performances, giant kites, a dog parade, adult & children's rides and activities, food tucks and an artisan craft beer and wine garden.
The Spirit Ship Celebration at the Mare Island Promenade will begin across the river at 5:30 p.m. It features funk, soul and R&B by the Project 4 Band and will end after dark with a drone light sky show depicting historic ships flying high over the Napa River.
There will be no fireworks over Mare Island this year, but Six Flags Discovery Kingdom will have nightly fireworks Friday through July 4, and then every Friday and Saturday through Aug. 5 during their Summer Nights Spectacular.
This evening, Poetry by the Bay will have an open mic event at the Mira Theatre, and Aki Kumar’s Bollywood Blues will be at the Empress Lounge.
