VALLEJO — This week brings us back-to-back book releases and poetry, music styles from experimental to symphonic, a job fair, and informational webinars about how to protect yourself from air pollution.
For fans of written and spoken word art, Poetry by the Bay will sound off tonight at the Mira Theatre, then Art Beat poetry hour will air on Ozcat radio Thursday morning. Alibi Bookshop will hold a book signing event with several budding authors from Young Authors Press on Friday, and Anna Bergman and Alan Saint Clark will debut their new comic art book “CIVIL the story of Bayard Rustin” on Sunday at Ethnic Notions Book Store.
Vastly different musical experiences are available this week. On Saturday, Re:Sound Vibration, an immersive experience of sound and vision, will take place at a Mare Island warehouse, and the Vallejo Symphony will perform works by George Gershwin, George Antheil and Sergei Prokofiev on Saturday and Sunday at the Empress Theatre.
The Moschetti coffee roastery is trying something different during their free coffee tasting on Saturday morning with Liaison Noire – “A taste of Gothique,” which will feature “eccentric, peculiar, and odd creations” for sale, body painting, and a DJ playing goth dance tunes.
Vallejo’s own 5 Cent Coffee will play their off-kilter brand of junkyard blues at the Townhouse on Saturday afternoon at a farewell party for bartender Donna Finney, who is leaving her 25-year long bartender gig to spend time with her family on the East Coast.
The Vallejo Citizens Air Monitoring Network is holding informational webinars tonight and next Tuesday. Learn about why asthma rates in Vallejo are so high, and what you can do to protect yourself and others.
You can learn about how a dedicated group of inmates brought substance abuse counseling to a prison in the documentary film “the 50” at the Empress Theatre on Thursday. If you’re looking for work, check out the job fair at the Vallejo City Unified School District headquarters on Saturday.
The wildly popular biannual Greek Street Food Festival is happening at Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church on Saturday.
Artists will be happy to find great deals on art supplies on Saturday at ARC-Solano’s yard sale fundraiser for their Art@Art studio and gallery for artists with developmental disabilities. Then find inspiration for putting those supplies to use at the Mare Island Art Studios’ “Letting Go Art Experience” workshop and meditation.
Saturday is the last day to day to catch the "Our Ancestral Roots" Hispanic Heritage Month exhibit at the Vallejo Museum.
