VALLEJO — This week in Vallejo you can catch a variety of curious creatures at Mare Island Art Studios, watch a rendition of a classic play and celebrate Christmas in July with the baked goods and vintage collectibles.
First, Bay Area Stage opens a three-week run of Ernest Thompson’s play “On Golden Pond” this Friday, where themes of mortality, family relationships, marriage, and generations all play out at Norman and Ethel Thayer’s small lake house in Maine.
Then on Saturday, The Vallejo Museum will commission, christen, and celebrate the launching of the USS Saginaw parade float during a free event. The float, created by Shannon O’Hare and the Obtainium Works team, is a loose mockup of the first ship built at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. It won the first prize trophy for a custom-built art car at the Fourth of July parade. This is also an opportunity to see the “Found in Collection” exhibit, a pop up presentation of museum artifacts that have not seen the light of day for many years.
Later on Saturday afternoon, you can attend the “Curious Creatures” art show opening reception at Mare Island Art Studios to see whimsical creatures crafted in textiles and mixed media mosaics, and meet the artists, Konnie May and Sherry Tobin Haney.
The Carquinez Quad Squad is launching a six-week roller skate boot camp at the Solano County Fairgrounds on Sunday. The boot camp is open to all bodies 18 years-old and over, and all skating abilities. Whether you’re interested in joining the squad or just want to learn how to roller skate, this will be a fun and welcoming activity.
The 7 Generations Intertribal Council Powwow that used to be held at the Vallejo Waterfront will happen at the Solano Community College campus in Fairfield this Saturday and Sunday. Traditional dances, handmade crafts, and while it hasn’t been officially announced, it will be a likely place to find frybread!
Then, it’s Christmas in July at Dillon Bread company. They’re pairing with their neighboring boutique Friday through Sunday mornings, to bring you vintage Christmas and summer collectibles, and yummy treats form local artisan bakers.
These are just some of the highlights we’ve selected for this week’s event posting. See the list below for more live music, comedy and community events.
