VALLEJO – Up-and-coming filmmakers will be featured at the monthly Art Walk event on Friday when Bay Area Cinema screens 15 family-friendly shorts by filmmakers from the Bay Area and beyond. The event has a new venue at the spacious and beautiful old bank building on Georgia Street and will kick off at 7 p.m.
Then the annual Dock of the Bay Festival will bring two days of live music to Mare Island, with funk by Morris Day, Con Funk Shun and the Average White Band on Saturday, and soul by the California Honeydrops, Fantastic Negrito, and Monophonics on Sunday.
To funk over here, or funk over there? The Vallejo Museum’s poster for their Vallejo music-themed gala fundraiser shows bands from their DJ’s set list, including Vallejo band Con Funk Shun. When the Dock of the Bay Festival announced their “Old School Funk Fest” on the same day, featuring the same band, Vallejo museum board member Maria Stats said she cried. She needn’t worry! There are enough funky music lovers in Vallejo to come out in force to support both events.
At the Empress Lounge this week you can catch the Steve Freund Trio playing blues tonight and a sizzling performance by vocalist Tia Carrol on Friday.
Between those events, arise to yummy artisan-baked goods at the Dillon Bread Company popup bakery on Thursday morning.
At Bambino’s, dine on Italian food and dance to Groovy Judy’s Hendrix-inspired funk rock on Friday, enjoy the contemporary jazz of Ron McGee and the Jazz Bridge Band on Saturday, or chill with Bryan Girard’s jazz quartet on Sunday.
The VTown Fiesta will grace Virginia Street downtown next to the Farmers’ Market on Saturday morning, with live music, Ballet Folklorico dancers, free kids activities, and local and regional artists and vendors.
Sunday’s live music offerings are rounded out with a free “Musical Potpourri” concert of a variety of music from pipe organ to marimba under the historic Tiffany glass windows at Peter’s Chapel on Mare Island.
Check the listings below for more live music, a drag show, art, crafts, recreation and gardening activities.
