VALLEJO — Trick-or-treat season is upon us as we ramp up to Halloween on Oct. 31. A wide range of Halloween-themed activities will abound for both kids and adults. A comedy show, a new musical play and a film festival fill out this week with no shortage of fun things to do.
The Mare Island Halloween Block Party, on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m., will span from Mare Island’s Officers Row on Walnut Avenue and into Alden Park. The event will offer activities for adults and kids alike; trick-or-treating, pumpkin painting, and face painting. Costume contests for kids, families and dogs. Dance to tunes by a live DJ, savor treats from food trucks, sip hot chocolate, mocktails, beer, or wine. Kids 13 and under will receive free Halloween gift bags.
To get into a spooky mood for the block party, drop by St. Peter’s Chapel at 3 p.m. for the Haunted Mare Island talk by paranormal investigator Jeffrey Dwyer, who will delve into eerie and intriguing phenomena that have been reported by visitors and residents.
Halloween events for kids
Both Vallejo and Benicia will host candy stroll and costume contests in their respective downtowns on Saturday. Vallejo’s event takes place during the Farmer’s Market, where participating businesses will pass out treats. The event will culminate with a costume contest at Bambino's Restaurant at 1:45 p.m.
Benicia Main Street will host a simultaneous Halloween costume contest and sidewalk stroll, with downtown merchants in the Halloween spirit. A canine and critter costume contest will take place on the First Street Green at noon.
St. Basil School is hosting “Boo Bash: Unleashed” on Saturday night, with eerie décor, ghostly fun, spooky entertainment, spine-tingling haunted houses and escape rooms
Then on Sunday, the Vallejo Moose Lodge will open their annual Trunk or Treat event at 11 a.m. with free treats, games, food, arts and crafts, a photo booth, and more. And on Sunday afternoon the Faith Gospel Church will host a Trunk or Treat with creatively decorated cars, fun games, and candy.
The John F. Kennedy Library will host a “Sometimes You Gotta Pop Out and Scare People” haunted house for kids of all ages on Tuesday evening, when the kings of horror literature will take over the library.
On Halloween night, Sharing the Blessings and Angels with Heart will host a Trunk or Treat and haunted house.
Then Nightmare on Glenn Street at Children’s Wonderland will have a haunted house, a spooky Trick-or-Treat Lane, dancing to a live DJ, and a chance to show off your costume in an Instagram Costume Contest.
Halloween events for grownups
On Friday night, a Halloween Function & Costume Contest will be hosted by Comedian Bud at the Noble Cinema Studios popup on Solano Avenue. Cash prize for best costume and live performances by G-Mo Skee, Crowda, Swift Homicide, Red Lotus, Odprophet and Brisco.
Then on Saturday night there are a few different Halloween events to choose from.
Danse Macabre’s Halloween Soiree at Moschetti Coffee Roaster will celebrate with a night of dancing to goth, darkwave, postpunk, and deathrock, and a costume contest with prizes, free coffee and pastries and a food vendor on site.
Gentleman Jim’s will also celebrate Halloween on Saturday night with a costume contest and music by DJ Brotha Biz. Or mingle with zombies and hit the dance floor at the Moonlight Masquerade fundraiser for Carquinez Village at the Benicia Clock Tower. Monster hits will be served by DJ Jessie Ray.
Not just Halloween
Poetry by the Bay’s monthly open mic at the Mira Theatre happens this Wednesday night. Come to share your work or to hear the work of local poets.
A new play by On the Fringe Youth will open at the Vallejo Museum on Thursday evening. “Wonderlandia” is a musical that retells the story of Alice in Wonderland through a Latine lens, with folklorico music from around the world and bilingual dialogue. Subsequent performances will run on Fridays and Saturdays through Nov. 2.
Also on Thursday evening you can catch the acclaimed “Stuttering Comedian” Nina G at the Empress Theatre Lounge. The show will be opened by clever humorists David May and Nathaniel Webb and Bay Area Comics founder Guile Mosher.
The Inspire Vallejo Designer Showcase will display the original artwork of the finalists in the Inspire Vallejo Design Challenge at the Vallejo Odd Fellows Lodge on Saturday afternoon. This is the culmination of a contest where young artists were asked to create an image that answers the question “What about Vallejo inspires you?”
The annual International KidsNFilm Festival will be screened at the Vallejo Museum on Saturday afternoon. The event features a collection of family-friendly films created by youth and professionals from around the globe.

Kid Anderson & John "Blues" Boyd
Blues guitarist Cristoffer "Kid" Andersen is from Herre, Norway. In 2001, at age 21, Andersen moved to the United States and joined blues frontman Terry Hanck's band, and quickly became a figure on the West Coast blues scene. Many blues lovers were introduced to the music of John “Blues” Boyd by Kid Andersen when they were working together on Billy Price’s new recording. The Commission on Culture & the Arts supports the cooperative promotion of visual and performing arts in Vallejo and the surrounding area. Meetings are hybrid in-person and on Zoom. The Campanelli Youth Chorus class, sponsored by Vallejo Choral Society (VCS) and administered by Greater Vallejo Recreation District (GVRD), offers an enriching choral education and performance experience to school-age children throughout Solano County and beyond. The youth chorus class empowers students to find their voice and develop an appreciation for singing and its power to lift the human spirit.
