VALLEJO — A new group called “Hip Hop Empowerment” is having two events in Vallejo on Saturday at Nobel Cinema Studios on Solano Avenue, a hip-hop themed vendor market in the early afternoon, and a launch party featuring a lineup of 20 hip hop artists.
The organization, founded by finance instructor Anna Glidewell, aims to “empower our community with the financial literacy skills needed for a brighter future,” according to a press release.
The launch event on March 9 will not only introduce the curriculum but will also feature captivating music performances by San Francisco rapper Black C of RBL Posse, DJHoppa, Cash Lansky, Marley B, Afrikan Tone, and RU.
“SOL, the Musical” by Benicia singer, songwriter, and playwright Charlene ‘Cher’ Alberto debuts at the Mira Theatre on Friday. The music is a mix of sounds from the 80s and Spanish folk music. The story includes themes of immigration and speaks to Asian-American and people of color representation and empowerment.
“While creating this project I was able to really get in touch with my roots and create new voices to be heard,” Alberto said in a statement about her work.
This Friday’s Art Walk should be a lively one, with the injection of funding and promotion of the Women's Artist Showcase at California Forever’s downtown Vallejo office.
The show will feature work by JeanCheríe, Ka'Ala and Hannah Malie Keala, and a fashion show by Claudette Inspired Vintage. V-Town Provísions, Anchor Pantry, Sunshine Smoothies and Everything Cake Company will provide food and refreshments. Live music will be performed by Selena Sobes, Jay Dela Cruz and DJ Flow.
But some artists have indicated they plan to continue protests of the controversial project, which aims to build a new city in rural Solano County.
Among the many other attractions of Art Walk scattered around the downtown is a free screening of TJ Walkup’s film “Generations” at Riverbank on Georgia Street at 7 p.m. “Generations,” is a feature-length documentary about the unique Filipino-American immigrant story in Vallejo.
There will be live music at IntegriTea, where the event extends late into the night after the official Art Walk activity on the street winds down.
This is also the closing weekend for “A Life in the Theatre,” a comic play by David Mamet at Bay Area Stage, with showtimes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
On Sunday afternoon you can catch the sweet sounds of the Vallejo Choral Society singing verses by Shakespeare set to music. The view from Vallejo's hilltop Masonic Temple, the wine and hors d’oeuvres, will please your eyes and taste buds along with your ears.
You may be able to help steer some public policy decisions on Thursday.
The Vallejo Passenger Rail Study Community Workshop will take place Thursday afternoon at the Joseph room at the John F. Kennedy Library. The study by the City of Vallejo and the Solano Transportation Authority will develop a conceptual foundation for a new transit service that would provide Vallejo residents, employees, and visitors with new regional mobility .
Later on Thursday evening, a Measure P Town Hall meeting will be held in the Joseph Room below the library to allow people to give feedback on how to spend Measure P money.
This only scratches the surface of what’s going on this week. Check the list below for more live music, art, and recreational activities.
