VALLEJO — This week in Vallejo you can welcome a new art gallery to town, watch Shakespeare in the Park, and get to know your neighbors at a National Night Out block party.
The Personal Space Art Gallery on Tennessee Street will present work by emerging, under-recognized, and mid-career artists. The gallery’s first show, “Salad Days,” will be on display at the opening party this Sunday.
The gallery’s back room will offer works on paper, artist books, t-shirts, sculptures, and artist editions. Artist and educator Lisa Rybovich Crallé said that opening a space has been a dream of hers for a long time.
You can also still catch the “Curious Creatures” art show, which is on display at Mare Island Art Studios.
Mare Island Art Studios also has an open call for art for a very different show in September. The theme of the upcoming “Causing Cultural Anarchy V” exhibition is “ForbHidden – our hidden sex, sexuality, gender, and identity in art.” All artists, especially queer artists and artists of color, are encouraged to submit artwork that is personal, political, satirical, objectionable, or daring. The submission deadline ends Monday at midnight.
This weekend, theater lovers can soak up some sun and culture when Vallejo Shakespeare in the Park performs “The Tragedy of Hamlet” in Hanns Park. The shows are free and begin at 4 p.m. Bring your own beach chair or blanket to sit on.
And if you missed “On Golden Pond” last weekend, it’s still running at Bay Area Theatre on Broadway.
Enjoy an afternoon of music, fine food and music by the Nick Phillips All Stars at Clear Water Zendo’s “Jazz in the Garden” fundraiser this Saturday. Raffle tickets and a silent auction will spice up the afternoon.
There will be block parties in several neighborhoods during the National Night Out event on Tuesday evening. The National Night Out website describes itself as “an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.”
