VALLEJO — A new art show featuring works curated by the Fiber Expressions artist collective will open at Mare Island Art Studios this weekend, a new alley beautification project will be unveiled downtown on Saturday, and emerging local performers will grace the stage at Bambino’s restaurant on Friday night.
“The Intrepid Stitch ~ Travels Across Time & Geography” will showcase the works of 17 talented fiber artists, who weave together stories of travel, history, and cultural journeys through intricate textile creations. The show will be open at Mare Island Art Studios on Saturday and Sunday afternoons through April 27.
Vallejo Main Street and the Vallejo Chamber of Commerce will join for a formal unveiling of the AARP Alleyway Project at the intersection of Indian Alley and Marin Street at noon on Saturday to celebrate a new mural and other artistic enhancements to the downtown.
On Friday night, Bambino’s will host a family friendly community talent show, showcasing local comedians, musicians, poets and other artists.
Other musical offerings around town this week begin with blues harmonica player Joel Astley at the Empress Lounge on Wednesday evening.
Then on Friday you can slam dance at a punk rock show at the Springstowne Library with the bands Terminator, Dissociation, and PostNasal Drainage. Later on Friday night, DJ Owen Owington Owensford will curate a selection of goth, post punk and dark wave music at the Reflection - Gothique Experience at the Odd Fellows hall.
On Saturday afternoon, the band 3day Weekend will play a selection of Motown, R&B, classic rock, and funk hits at Vino Godfather on Mare Island.
For live music during dinner on Saturday, catch the Bryan Girard jazz trio at Manny's Steakhouse, or singer/songwriter Matte Jaffe at the Mare Island Brewing Co. Ferry Taproom.
The Super Diamond, a Neil Diamond tribute band, will play at the Empress Theatre on Saturday night. Super Diamond delivers a glittering, smoke-filled show performing Neil Diamond’s hits with a rock edge.
On Monday night, the Townhouse Ramblers will play two acoustic sets of folk, Americana and blues at the Townhouse Cocktail Lounge.
And if you missed the opening of Verismo Opera’s opening show last weekend, they’ll return to the Mira Theatre for a Saturday night performance and a Sunday matinee.
Vallejo will honor recently departed Vallejo artist Adolfo Alcala Manuel at a memorial service at Colonial Chapel on Wednesday afternoon, followed by a funeral service late Thursday morning at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church.
Then on Thursday night, Bay Area drag queens, speakers and local performers will hold a tribute and life celebration for Manuel titled “Ms. Asia's Final Act” at the Townhouse Cocktail Lounge.

Joel Astley
Since forming his first band in 2014, Joel Astley quickly established himself as a world-class bandleader, harmonica player, singer, songwriter, and entertainer. In the past year, he has been on a meteoric rise on the international Blues Music scene, joining Lee Oskar Harmonicas as a featured artist in 2023 and signing with Blue Heart Records to release his first album, Seattle to Greaseland. The album debuted on August 18, 2023, at Number 7 on the Blues Billboard Top Ten, and met critical acclaim worldwide. He has since received the Silver Medal Award from the Global Music Awards, Honorable Mention in the 2024 International Songwriting Competition for his song Secondhand Kid, and is currently nominated for four 2024 Josie Awards, two 2024 Independent Blues Awards, and two 2024 Blues Blast Music Awards.
